Mariachi “Sones del Desierto”
Mariachi “Sones del Desierto” is a year round program comprised of a diverse group of students learning traditional Mariachi music with authentic arrangements and instruments. This wonderful cultural-musical exchange brings students together in a fun and supportive environment as they learn to play and appreciate traditional Mariachi music and a new culture.
Our Mariachi students have performed at the Mesa Arts Center, Chandler Multicultural Festival, Arizona Children’s Museum and in schools wearing traditional Mariachi costumes. An audition process determines placement in Mariachi “Sones del Desierto” Principiantes and Mariachi “Sones del Desierto” Avanzados.

To schedule an audition time please contact the Desert Sounds Office at 480-304-4762.
Violin:
- Solo of your choice with no accompaniment
- Scales C, G, D and A major. Two or three octaves scales are encouraged for older students.
- Sight reading (provided by adjudicator)
Guitar/Vihuela:
- Solo of your choice with no accompaniment
- Chord progressions I-IV-V-I in the keys of C, G, D, A
- Sight reading (provided by adjudicator)
Guitarron:
- Solo of your choice with no accompaniment
- Note progressions I-IV-V-I in the keys of C, G, D, A
- Sight reading (provided by adjudicator)
Trumpet:
- Solo of your choice with no accompaniment
- Scales: Play C, G and chromatic scale (from a comfortable low note to high note)
- Sight reading (provided by adjudicator)
Voice:
- Solo of your choice with no accompaniment. Young students may sing Happy Birthday or The Star Spangled Banner
- Pitch matching
- Sight singing (provided by adjudicator)
Mariachi “Sones del Desierto” Principiantes is an entry-level group of students who show they are eager musicians. For most, this is their first experience playing Mariachi music. Members learn to work together as a mariachi ensemble. Individual commitment and preparation of music outside of rehearsals is required. Individual progress is expected and recognized.
Weekly rehearsals are on Saturday from 11:00 to 12:15 at the Desert Sounds Studio. Annual Membership fees are $8.00 per month or save money and pay $60 by October 6, 2012.
Mariachi “Sones del Desierto” Avanzados member’s auditions show musicality and advanced technical skills. Providing a concentrated learning and performance experience for aspiring musicians, Mariachi “Sones del Desierto” Avazados members learn increasingly challenging Mariachi music throughout the year. Individual commitment and preparation of music outside of rehearsals is required. Individual progress is expected and recognized.
Weekly rehearsals are on Saturday from 9:30 to 11:00 at the Desert Sounds Studio. Annual membership fees are $9.00 per month or save money and pay $75 by October 6, 2012.
Rehearsals are every Saturday.
